Common secondary causes of constipation include anatomic lesions (eg, fissure in ano, hemorrhoids, fistulas, ischiorectal abscess) and colonic or rectal neoplasm's. Other causes include metabolic conditions (eg, hypothyroidism, hypocalcaemia, diabetes), neurological conditions (eg, Hirschsprung's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis), and cerebrovascular disease. In some patients, inadequate fiber intake may lead to constipation. Another possible cause is ingestion of certain drugs, such as opiate analgesics, aluminum-containing antacids, iron and calcium supplements, antidiarrheals, antihistamines, antidepressants, antiparkinson agents, and antihypertensive, particularly calcium channel blockers and centrally acting antiadrenergics. Constipation also occurs, for reasons that are not well understood while using oxygen based colon cleanser, in a subgroup of patients with psychosocial problems.
